Chapter Fourteen

Catherine slept better that night and arose with thoughts of Wills. She decided to ring him, though it was early.

“Your arrest isn’t going to have any effect on your standing with the Dunn School, is it?” she asked him.

“I rang my professor last night,” he said. “They’re going to give me the benefit of the doubt for the time being, but they don’t want me in the lab. I’m strictly limited to book research until proof of someone else’s guilt comes to light.”

“Oh, Wills!” said Catherine. “I’m so sorry.”

“Well, my professor’s a scientist, remember. He wouldn’t make a permanent move without proof, I don’t think. But the best proof is to find the real murderer. I don’t think I can count on the police for that at this point.”

“And Harry and I are committed to finding that if possible.” She told him about Harry’s trip to Monte Carlo. “So, James Westfield’s brother is likely to remain a question mark, at least for the time being. He is dependent on his father for money. I can’t help but think his father is going to be displeased at his leaving school and decamping to Monte Carlo, presumably to gamble.”

“At least Emily seems to be in the clear,” he said.

“That reminds me,” Catherine said, smiting her forehead with the heel of her hand. “I still need to find that witness that saw Emily at Mr. Westfield’s flat. Maybe she saw something else later.”

“What do you hope to learn from the witness?”

“I don’t know. It’s just a matter of leaving no stone unturned. Can you tell me where his flat was?”

“It was on Clarendon Street. James was your neighbor. Two doors down from the University Press.”

“Thanks, Wills. I’ll keep you informed about my progress. Try not to worry.”

She needed to speak to Emily about Tony, as well, but she didn’t share that with her brother.

“Thanks for everything, Cat. Especially for hiring Mr. Spence. It’s good to be out of that place.”

“I’ll see what else I can manage so that you can get back to work,” she said.

After they rang off, she decided to try finding the witness before she had her 11:00 tutorial. Cherry told her it was cold out, so she dressed in her warmest tweed suit, a heather-colored jumper, and her fur coat with the large collar that stood around her head.

She walked swiftly down the street through a freezing fog. Knocking on the flat doors across from the victims flat, she found only one person home—a tiny elderly lady in a flowered housedress wearing a heavy shawl.

“I’m sorry to bother you, ma’am. My name is Catherine Tregowyn, and I would like to know if you are the lady who spoke to the police about the murder across the street?”

The lady’s gleamed with interest. “I am.”

“I am looking into this case. Would you mind if I spoke with you for a few moments?”

“You had better come it,” she said, opening the door wider.

Catherine walked into a flat that was overly warm and smelled of Mentholatum.
